We should have made strong statement: Natwar
Former External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh on Thursday said Indias opposition to the death sentence awarded to the former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, should have come from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to send across a stern message to the U.S.
A perfunctory remark issued by an officer of the rank of Deputy Secretary saying that Saddam Hussein should not be hanged does not befit a nation of one billion people. We should make a strong statement audible in the comity of nations, Mr. Natwar Singh said while addressing a meeting of Muslim religious leaders here.
Mr. Natwar Singh attended the meeting on an invitation extended by the All-India Hakim Ajmal Khan Memorial Society.
Mr. Natwar Singh said execution of Mr. Hussein would create an unprecedented wave of outrage in the 56 Muslim countries, which were all U.N. members, and feared it might make the clash of civilisations a dreadful reality.
The former Union Minister, who has since been suspended from the Congress membership, said U.S. President George Bush should be made to realise that he had brought the world to the brink of disaster by his wrong policies in West Asia.
There is no need for our Prime Minister to toe the U.S. line in the world affairs, he said.
