Animal rights activists in India have called on the eve of a controversial tournament for the elite, centuries-old sport of elephant polo to be banned due to what they say is the pain and suffering it causes the animals. Mercury dips in Rajasthan; Churu the coldest

Strong northwesterly winds led to a dip in temperatures in Rajasthan, where Churu continued to be the coldest place with a minimum of 4.4 degree celsius. Mercury dipped to almost two degree celsius in most parts of the State. MET officials attributed the sudden decrease in temperatures to the absence of cloudy conditions and active northwesterly winds. Ajmer recorded a minimum temperature of 11.2 degree celsius, Jaipur 6.5, Pilani 6.3, Barmer 10.2, Jaisalmer 10.5, Jodhpur 11.6 and Bikaner 10.7 Degree celsius.

Land deal: Rajasthan HC issues notice

The Rajasthan High Court has issued show cause notices to the state government and the CBI office in Jaipur in connection with a land allotment case. The state government had allotted land worth Rs 50 crore for just Rs 45 lakh to the Deen Dayal Trust. Incidentally, the trust is headed by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Earlier this month, a lower court in Jaipur had ordered a probe into the land deal but so far the government has not even registered an FIR in the case. The Congress alleges major bungling even in the Deed made for the Trust.
