Imported wheat hits Indian ports on time

Filed under:

Over 26 lakh tonnes of imported wheat arrived at the designated ports till November 15 out of 55 lakh tonne contracted, while 3.08 lakh tonne more is scheduled to reach in the next 10 days.

A quantity of 26.89 lakh tonnes has reached Indian ports as on November 15, 2006, an official release said.

Meanwhile, five vessels that have sailed for Indian ports with 3.08 lakh tonnes are scheduled to arrive by November 25.

Retail prices remained steady at Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad for the week ended on November 9, 2006. However, there was a slight increase in wheat prices at Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar, Patna and Thiruvanthapuram.

Though spot prices of wheat registered an upward trend during October 31 to November 8, the futures prices showed a declining trend over the same period.

The government is importing wheat, after a gap of six years, to maintain buffer stock as it could procure only 92 lakh tonnes during 2005-06 marketing season.

State Trading Corporation, on behalf of the government, has contracted for 55 lakh tonnes of duty-free wheat since February.
