This winters eve, Rajasthani lightweight handmade quilts are selling like hot cakes.
Jaipurs quilt market sees a daily business of Rs.2 million, which is only likely to grow in the next few months. Traders here attribute the improved bottom line to new designs and product modifications.
The quilts have been given a new look. Also, velvet quilts are a new entry in the market this time, says Anwar, a quilt maker here.
Exports of these quilts, too, are on the upswing. In Sanganeri print, tie and dye and makhmali (velvet) fabric, the quilts are a regular buy in Turkey and South African markets.
We are getting enquiries, particularly from Turkey and South Africa. There is a growing demand for quilts made of velvet, he added.
As per trade estimates, Jaipur accounts for annual exports of over Rs.500-700 million to European and American markets alone. Now with demand from Turkey and South Africa, we hope to cross over Rs.1 billion, said Akhtar, another quilt maker in a city where 10,000 families are engaged in quilt making.
The Sanganeri print and velvet threads were originally used in jackets. Later, the print was transferred to quilts with great success. The use of natural cotton is another reason for the brisk sales.
